Chhau masks are traditional handcrafted masks originating from the Purulia district in the state of West Bengal, India. These masks are an integral part of the Chhau dance, a traditional Indian tribal martial dance form that combines elements of dance, drama, and martial arts. The Chhau dance is performed during festivals and special occasions, depicting various mythological stories, historical events, and folklore.

Generally, the masks used during the Chhau dance are bigger in size. Thus, we tried to make the same masks in smaller size with affecting its authenticity and artistic value so that it can be used as home decor. Traditionally masks of Goddess Durga, Laxmi, Saraswati, Kali, Lord Krishna, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Shiva, Asura etc. are made. Apart from that, masks of tribal men and women are also made.

How Old the craft is?

Chhau mask art is a traditional cultural heritage of Purulia in West Bengal, India. It is a form of metal casting that uses wax and brass to create intricate and detailed sculptures.

The masks are used for Chhau dance, a semi-classical dance form that fuses folk and martial arts elements. According to some sources, the tradition of making Chhau masks started during the rule of king Madan Mohan Singh Deo of Baghmundi, who reigned from 1838 to 1879 Therefore, Chhau mask art is about 150 years old.

The Chhau masks play a crucial role in bringing the characters to life during the Chhau dance performances. These masks are crafted with precision and skill, often by skilled artisans who have inherited the art form from their ancestors.

The masks are typically made from natural materials like clay, paper, and cloth. Purulia chhau mask received its Geographical Indication (GI) certification from Govt. of India in 2018.
